Community Message - June, 2024
Since 2011, Heart to Heart has been working with Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel - youth who are geographic neighbours, living just 15-30 minutes away from one another, but in so many ways living in separate worlds. Heart to Heart does its work and takes its strength from two propositions: 1. All the people living in the region deserve to live in safety, security, and peace, and 2. The road to achieving that objective lies, in part, in working with young people with demonstrated leadership potential. 

Many times people ask us to share our analysis of history. We are not going to open up the past right now, not because it isn't important - in fact we do so each summer with our campers because only by learning, unlearning, and reckoning with the past can we truly move forward. But today we ask you to join us in focusing on the present and future because no matter how we got to where we are today, we are in desperate need of something different ahead. We care deeply about all of our kids and their futures. 

We are also often asked what we think of the current reality. We wrote to our community in October. It's now June and over 35,000 Palestinians, half of them women and children, have been killed. Over 1200 Israelis have been killed, including at least 33 children. Each day brings more death, more injuries, more displacement, more trauma, and more lives forever altered in innumerable ways. 

These numbers are not just numbers. Each one represents a person. A human being with hopes and dreams, people who loved them and who they loved. Each one of them is a whole world that has been destroyed. 

Each loss and each day that this continues adds more pain, more grief, more trauma, and more fear of what the next day may bring. We join the call for a ceasefire that will bring an end to this catastrophic situation, the safe release of hostages and prisoners unfairly constrained, urgent humanitarian aid and the rebuilding of Gaza, an end to the occupation, and a plan for political leadership of both peoples who are truly committed to a peaceful future based on mutual recognition and respect. 

No one is going anywhere. We want and need a better future for our alumni and their communities. We want and need a better future for each of you in our Heart to Heart community, and your communities. True peace comes not only in the absence of fighting or conflict. Rather, true peace is born when there is justice, fairness, and equality for everyone. We remain committed as ever to do our part to get there.
